Product Description

What is PEEK?

PEEK stands for PolyEther Ether Ketone.  PEEK is a colourless high-performance semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastic. Also known as Ketron, LNP, KetaSpire, Sustapeek, Tecapeek.

What are the properties of PEEK?

  • Superior strength-to-weight ratio.
  • Creep-resistant.
  • Abrasion resistant.
  • Long-wearing, low wear and tear.
  • Withstands very high temperatures.
  • Radiation- and chemical-resistant.
  • Low water absorption.
  • Easy to machine and fabricate.

Is PEEK Plastic Rod Food Grade?

PEEK has FDA approval. This means it is safe for direct contact with delicate foods during the production process. For this reason, PEEK food handling components are used in both food packaging and food production processes.

How strong is PEEK?

Compared to metals such as aluminium and steel, PEEK has greater tensile strength. Furthermore, it can withstand prolonged exposure to high temperatures, harsh chemicals, and moisture. PEEK is a strong material with a GPa of 3.6 and a tensile strength of 90 to 100 MPa.

So it makes sense for engineers to consider PEEK material.  What’s more it is easily machinable and long lasting to replace heavier metal parts. Furthermore, with PEEK being a lighter material than metal parts, it can contribute to lower energy consumption.

How does PEEK wear?

PEEK machining rod has a great wearing capability, including adhesive, abrasive, corrosive, and surface-fatigue wear. Therefore, it makes sense to consider PEEK when you next need to replace bearings or seals as part of your regular machinery maintenance.  And then having that kind of reliability and safety means your improvement in productivity can be well worth the expense.

Can PEEK handle water and outdoor conditions?

With very low water absorption properties, PEEK is ideal for water applications even in high humidity.  Also, it is resistant to salt water and steam. (Note, however, PEEK is sensitive to UV Radiation which can cause the polymer to become brittle).  For applications that require high resistance to chemicals or voltage, PTFE Teflon Rod may also be suitable.

Uses of PEEK:

  • Bushings
  • Bearings
  • Seals
  • Back-up rings
  • Pump and valve components
  • Vacuum wand handles
  • Semiconductor machinery components
  • Electrical connectors
  • Medical and food manufacturing applications

What colour is PEEK Engineering Rod?

It is a “Natural” colour which is light brown/beige.

Environmental and end of life considerations

With PEEK being a thermoplastic, it has a very high melting temperature and combustion temperature is in excess of 600c.  Moreover, when exposed to flames, this engineering plastic rod emits little smoke or toxic gas fumes.  So is relatively safe to the environment.  PEEK can be broken down, reprocessed and recycled.
