Manual Cleaning Process Using a Round Galvanized Steel Wire Brush (Flue Cleaning Brush)
1. Safety & Preparation
- Turn Off Power: Shut down the exhaust fan and disconnect gas/electricity to prevent accidents.
- Protect Kitchen Equipment: Cover appliances and surfaces with plastic sheets to catch falling debris.
- Wear Proper PPE: Use gloves, safety glasses, a face mask, and non-slip boots for protection.
2. Initial Grease Breakdown
- Apply a Heavy-Duty Degreaser: Spray or brush on a commercial degreaser and let it sit for 10–15 minutes to soften grease buildup.
- Loosen Surface Grease: Use a scraper or putty knife to remove large grease deposits before brushing.
3. Cleaning the Duct with the Round Wire Brush
- Attach the Brush to a Rod or Flexible Shaft: This allows for better reach inside the duct.
- Start at the Hood & Move Upward: Insert the brush into the duct opening and scrub in a push-pull motion.
- Rotate for Deeper Cleaning:
- Turn the brush as you push and pull to scrub all sides evenly.
- Focus on bends and joints where grease accumulates the most.
- Reapply Degreaser if Needed: Stubborn areas may need a second round of treatment before scrubbing again.
4. Rinsing & Drying
- Use Hot Water & Cloths: Wipe down the duct walls with hot water-soaked rags to remove loosened grease.
- Vacuum Out Residue: A wet/dry vacuum can help remove remaining grease and water.
- Allow to Air Dry: Ensure all surfaces are completely dry before restarting the exhaust system.
5. Final Inspection & Touch-Ups
- Use a Flashlight & Mirror or Duct Camera: Check all areas to confirm the duct is grease-free.
- Repeat Scrubbing if Needed: Any missed spots should be cleaned before completing the job.
