What Makes The ROCK OFF Stone Guard For Caravans Different From Mudflaps?
There are a few critical differences between ROCK OFF stone guard for caravans and traditional mud flaps.
- Less drag. ROCK OFF’s brushes are far lighter than mud flaps, allowing greater airflow and creating less drag.
- Absorbs impact. Mudflaps tend to bounce stones off in unpredictable directions, whereas ROCK OFF’s bristles absorb the impact of the rocks, taking the force out of them.
ROCK OFF caravan stone guards is also different from spray suppressants. Spray suppressants are traditionally found on trucks, trailers, and buses. They’re designed to reduce the amount of water picked up by trucks, thereby improving visibility for other road users. ROCK OFF camper trailer stone guard has softer bristles, more flexible backing, and is far stronger than spray suppressants as it was developed to absorb the impact of rocks.
Tips for Installing the Stone Guard for a Caravan
While we recommend going to a local caravan service centre or trailer outfitter to help you attach ROCK OFF caravan stone deflector to your vehicle, we have some tips for those wanting to try it themselves.
- When Busy Bee Brushware refers to ‘brush trim’, we are talking about the exact length of the bristle. So, when measuring for length, you’ll need to take into account the brush trim and the length of the backing.
- Make sure to mount the brush anywhere that has 75mm to 150mm clearance from the road.
- As the bristles on ROCK OFF’s stone guard for caravans are plastic, you’ll need to mount the brush away from the exhaust pipe. Failure to do so will result in distortion of the bristles (melting) and inconsistency in regards to effectiveness.

Choosing The Right Product: Important Considerations
Follow our five-step process to order your ideal ROCK OFF Towing Brush Strip Kit.
Step 1: Where its going…
Before ordering your ROCK OFF® Stone Guard, it is important to consider where and how you are going to mount your Brush.
Vehicles come in all shapes and sizes, which is why ROCK OFF comes in a range of ready-to-install Mounting Kits for convenient fitting on your towing vehicle, caravan or trailer. Time to get under your 4WD or caravan to get a closer look!
Remember, there is no “one size fits all” as every vehicle set up is individual. Our range is designed to cover most vehicles, but you may need to consider discussing your set up with your local vehicle modification specialist, or caravan service centre.
Step 2: Weight considerations
You will need to allow for weight limits for your towing vehicle, adding a ROCK OFF Caravan Stone Guard Brush will add additional weight to your set up. However, you will find that your ROCK OFF weights are lighter than other products, and also provides better air-flow under your vehicle.

For our Stainless Steel Rails add another 2.5kgs, and a set of Stainless Steel brackets allow another 1.5kg to your set up. (weights are approx.)

Step 3: Measure your mounting height
Take your height measurements at a time when your towing vehicle and caravan or trailer is fully loaded — this will ensure any suspension systems you have in place are considered.
Measure from the ground to the mark where the top of your ROCK OFF Mount will be located. Deduct 100mm for road clearance and a further 50mm allowance for the backing of the brush and Mounting rail, total 150mm. This will provide the ideal bristle length option for your vehicle.
Remember that our drop down options shows the “bristle length”, so you will need to allow 50mm for the brush backing when you choose. If unsure, choose your ROCK OFF at the shorter measurement – you can always lower your fitting later. If your ROCK OFF bristle is too long, it is difficult to trim
Please Note: Insufficient clearance may cause dragging on rough or rutted road surfaces and reduce ROCK OFF’s lifespan. Excessive clearance may reduce ROCK OFF’s effectiveness.
Step 4: Exhaust considerations
Keep exhaust flow and heat away from ROCK OFF. This product performs best when installed with plenty of distance away from your vehicle’s exhaust outlet. ROCK OFF is made from tough Polypropylene fibre, but it can be damaged by exhaust heat build-up.
Exhaust Shield and Extension Kits are available to allow free flow of your exhaust heat away from your towing vehicle. Alternatively, consider modifying your vehicle’s exhaust system to a side-exit style.
Recommended mounting positions:
- For towing vehicles with a straight exhaust outlet: Consider mounting ROCK OFF underneath the exhaust pipe.
- For towing vehicles with a downward-facing exhaust outlet: Consider our Exhaust Extension Kit. Particularly if your exhaust outlet is less than 450mm from your intended ROCK OFF Mounting.
Step 5: Other considerations
Aftermarket accessories (mudflaps, chains, Anderson plugs, auxiliary fittings etc) may need consideration when determining the mounting height and bristle length of your ROCK OFF.
Rigid-style mud flaps are recommended if using in conjunction with ROCK OFF. Flexible and/or chain-attached mud flaps are not recommended as these can cause stones to bounce underneath ROCK OFF and strike your vehicle.
Check access to accessories and auxiliary fittings such as Anderson plugs and reversing lights. These accessories may have components or cables which may impact your mounting position. If possible, mount ROCK OFF underneath or above these fittings to ensure easy access.

Our Rails and Brackets are made from heavy duty Stainless Steel to handle the rigours of the dirt highways. Prevent nasty dings and scratches to the front of your caravan and reduce the chance of stone bounce back taking out the back window of your vehicle. ROCK OFF also protects the underside of your caravan, including pipe-work, tanks, electrical, and your valuable suspension.
