Which Flue Cleaning Kit Do I Need? (Easy Step By Step Guide for Wood Heater Owners)
Not sure which flue cleaning kit to choose? You’re not alone — it’s one of the most common questions we get during flue season.
The key is knowing what actually matters (and what doesn’t). This guide will walk you through it step by step.
1. Start Here: Is Your Flue Straight or Does It Have Bends?
This is the most important factor.
Straight Flue
If your flue runs straight up we recommend the Standard Polypropylene Flue Cleaning Kit
- Uses screw-together rods
- Designed for top-down cleaning
- Most popular option
Flue with Bends or Angled Entry
If your flue has:
- 2 x 45° bends
- Smaller offsets (even around 15°)
- An angled entry from the heater
Then we recommend the Flexi Flue Cleaning Kit
- Flexible nylon rod system
- Can handle up to 2 x 45° bends
- Ideal for tight corners and offsets
- Designed for bottom-up cleaning from inside
Even small angles can make rigid rods difficult to use — this is where Flexi is the better option.

2. How Tall Is Your Flue?
No matter which kit you choose, you’ll need enough length to clean the full flue.
For straight flues, choose your standard kit based on the height of your flue:
- Single storey: ~12 ft (4m)
- Split level: ~18 ft (5.4m)
- Double storey: ~21 ft (6.3m)+
These kits use 3 foot (91cm) rods that screw-together to reach the required height.
For flues with bends or bottom-up cleaning, flexi flue kits are available in a range of lengths:
- 12ft (4m)
- 18ft (5.5m)
- 21 ft (6.5m)
- 24ft (7.3m)
- 27ft (8.3m)
- 30ft (9.2m)
Always choose a length that matches or slightly exceeds the height of your flue.
3. Cleaning From the Top or Bottom (Simple Explanation)
This is where many people get stuck. The type of flue usually determines how you should clean it.
Standard Rod Kits (straight flues)
- Designed for top-down cleaning from the roof
- Can be used from the bottom, but not recommended due to control, mess, and risk of rods loosening
Flexi Flue Kits (bends or tricky access)
- Designed for bottom-up cleaning from inside the heater
- Ideal if you don’t want to climb onto the roof
- If you’re planning to clean from inside your home, a Flexi Kit is the best choice
4. When Are Galvanised Steel Brushes Suitable?
For most customers, we recommend our Standard Polypropylene Kit or Flexi Flue Nylon Kit, especially for stainless steel flues.
Galvanised steel brushes are better suited to:
- older steel flues
- boilers
- pot belly stoves,
- or when you can’t cool the flue down before cleaning and need a brush that won’t melt.
⚠️ However, we generally do not recommend galvanised steel brushes for stainless steel flues, as the steel bristles can scratch inside the flue. Over time, this can lead to increased creosote build-up.
5. Do You Have a Chimney Instead of a Flue?
For larger, square chimneys we recommend our Chimney Cleaning Brush Kit (Professional Kit)
- Larger diameter brushes
- Suitable for square or oversized flues
- Can be used top-down or bottom-up
Tip: Measure the diagonal to choose the correct size.

6. Choosing the Right Brush Size
Match the brush to the inside diameter of your flue
- Too small → ineffective
- Too large → may get stuck
Between sizes?
Go slightly larger and trim if needed.
7. When Should I Use a Pull-Through Brush?
Pull-through brushes are useful for:
- Long or hard-to-reach flues
- Situations where rods or flexi systems aren’t practical
- Cleaning by pulling the brush through from one end
Ideal for awkward or extended runs
Quick Guide
- Straight flue? → Standard Poly Kit
- Any bends or angles? → Flexi Kit
- Don’t want to clean from on top of the roof ? → Flexi Kit
- Large chimney? → Chimney Kit
- Stainless steel flue? → Avoid galvanised steel brushes
- Long or awkward setup? → Pull-through options
